Campus accessibility is a dynamic process in which the Disability Resources (DR) office plays an active partnership with other University offices and staff members. We work closely with students to ensure reasonable access to campus buildings, classrooms, residence halls, and other areas. Depending upon a given student’s needs, campus access may also entail the assistance of related offices such as Student Health Services (935-6666), Parking (935-5601) and Transportation Services (935-4140).
Below is a brief description of how DR works with various other offices on campus.
Parking & Transportation Services: Parking & Transportation Services works with students to provide parking passes that allow for handicapped parking. At WU, handicapped parking permits are available through Parking & Transportation to any student who holds both (1) a valid WU parking pass and (2) a state-issued handicapped parking permit. Students who need handicapped parking do not need to go through Disability Resources to receive it. They may go directly to Parking & Transportation Services. If a student is having difficulty finding adequate handicapped parking on campus, they may contact DR to discuss their needs.
Medical Shuttle: The university operates a Medical Shuttle that is available to students with mobility impairments due to health conditions or disabilities. If a student needs the use of the Medical Shuttle for a medical reason, they should contact Student Health at 935-6666. If a student needs the use of the Medical Shuttle for a disability-based reason, they should contact Disability Resources. Both Student Health and Disability Resources realize that there is overlap regarding which office a student should use, and both offices will work with a student to make sure their needs are met.
Housing Accommodations: The University occasionally grants students with disabilities housing accommodations based on disability status. Students should contact DR well before housing assignments are made to make these requests. Examples of common housing accommodations include accessible bathrooms, hand held shower heads, accessible buildings, and first-floor room assignments. The University does not grant single room housing accommodations to students with learning disabilities or attention deficit disorders , as the dorm rooms are not considered distraction reduced places. Students who seek a quieter living arrangement are encouraged to consider the University’s Substance Free housing, which does tend to be more quiet than other dorms. Occasionally, housing accommodations are made for psychiatric disabilities.
Classroom Accessibility: While Washington University has many new, accessible buildings, some classroom buildings are old and not readily accessible. DR works with the University’s Registrar’s Office to ensure that students with mobility impairments have classes and other events scheduled in accessible rooms. Students who need accessible classrooms should contact DR several months before the start of the semester to ensure smooth scheduling of classroom and meeting space.
